Dr Simon Chong, B.Med.Sci, MBBS, FANZCA




Dr Simon Chong is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Western Health and the Royal Children’s Hospital. He is also accredited to work at Epworth Richmond and Freemasons, Northpark Private, John Fawkner, Melbourne Private, Western Private and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals.

He has a special interest in paediatric anaesthesia, having completed a fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He enjoys being able to keep a child happy and relaxed before a procedure and helping them wake calmly and safely from anaesthesia.

Dr Chong has published papers on cardiac output monitoring and on publication bias in anaesthesia. He is currently researching pain relief in paediatric tonsillectomy patients and is investigating recovery outcomes of thoracic surgery patients.

Dr Chong undertook his anaesthetic training through the Austin and Northern Hospitals. He is an instructor on anaesthetic and critical care courses and is the coordinator of the Western Anaesthesia Registrar Ultrasound and Regional Anaesthesia course.

Outside of work, Dr Chong enjoys running and travel.

Dr Alexandre Henry, B.A, B.Sc, MBBS, FANZCA



Dr Alexandre Henry is a Specialist Anaesthetist currently working at Western Health and expanding his private appointments throughout Melbourne.

His interests in his field include obstetrics and paediatric anaesthesia. He has completed a Royal Children Hospital Anaesthesia fellowship before becoming Supervisor of Training for the last five years at Western Health. He is committed to teaching and mentoring junior members of the department and guiding them to consultancy. He has served on various committees both at Western Health and ANZCA as well as being part of the executive within the department.

His worldwide education opportunities in France and US (Johns Hopkins) have given him a perspective with a penchant towards the welfare and interest of all members of our community and insuring highest quality care for his patients.

His external interests are focusing on three amazing kids as well as trivia, music and pop culture.


Dr Zamil Karim, MBBS, FANZCA, FFPMANZCA, FIPP




Dr Zamil Karim is an Anaesthetic and Pain Specialist at Western Health. He is also accredited to work at John Fawkner, Melbourne Private, Glenferrie Private, Western Private and Western Day Hospitals.

He has a special interest in chronic pain management, particularly in neuropathic pain, complex regional pain, the use of opiates for cancer and non-cancer pain, neuromodulation and intrathecal drug delivery devices and modalities.


Dr Candida Marane, BSc, MBBS, Grad Cert Clin Ed, FANZCA




Dr Marane is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Western Health and is looking to grow her private practice.

She completed the majority of her anaesthetic training through The Canberra Hospital, including a fellowship in anaesthesia for upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery. She then completed a simulation and medical education fellowship through Western Health.

Dr Marane continues to be heavily involved with simulation and medical education. She co-ordinates simulation teaching for anaesthetic registrars at Western Health and the North West Training Scheme, and organises and instructs on numerous anaesthetic and critical care courses. She has been actively involved in several committees of ANZCA, ASA and AMA at both regional and national levels.

She was involved in the establishment of a collaborative Western Health and Dental Health Services Victoria specialist dental service for patients with an intellectual disability and other complex medical conditions, and continues as the anaesthetic lead for this service.

Dr Marane enjoys providing high quality, evidence based and safe care to her patients throughout their entire perioperative journey.

Dr Martin Nguyen, B.Med.Sci(Hons), MBBS, FANZCA




Dr Martin Nguyen completed his anaesthetic training at Western Health and underwent his fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is accredited to work at Epworth Richmond, Epworth Cliveden, Epworth Freemasons, The Valley Private, Knox Private and Western Private Hospitals.

He specialises in anaesthesia for orthopaedic, thoracic, general and upper gastrointestinal, plastic, urology, ear nose and throat and paediatric surgery. He has special interests in perioperative medicine, education, bioinformatics and medical technology.

He holds positions on the Adverse Drug Reaction Committee, Low Risk Ethics Committee and Transfusion Committee. His interest in teaching has led him to hold positions as an instructor on many anaesthetic and critical care courses. He is a Supervisor of Training, organises the Fellowship Examination Program and is the Research Module Supervisor.

He is an associate investigator on various multi-centre research trials including Colorectal Cancer Anaemia and Iron Management Study. He has also authored the ANZCA Standard for Neonatal Resuscitation Education Sessions.


Dr John Ozcan, B.Med.Sci, MBBS, FANZCA




Dr John Ozcan is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Western Health. He completed his anaesthetic training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, then completed a fellowship year as Principal Fellow and simulation/medical education fellow at Western Health.

Dr Ozcan’s clinical interests include obstetric and ophthalmic anaesthesia, and anaesthesia for general surgery, ear nose and throat, urology, orthopaedic and plastic surgery.

He coordinates the fellowship exam tutorial program for senior anaesthetic trainees, is a welfare officer at Western Health, and is course director for the Australian Resuscitation Council ALS2 course at Western Health. He has been involved in research looking at trainee selection into anaesthesia training, and audit projects aiming to minimise paediatric fasting times.

Dr Ozcan is committed to achieving safe and best quality patient care for his patients. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his young family and running.


Dr Kien Quach, MBBS, FANZCA




Dr Kien Quach is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Western and Eastern Health. He is accredited to work at John Fawkner, Western Private, Epworth and Western Day Hospitals.

He completed his anaesthetic training through St Vincent’s Hospital. He has a special interest in regional anaesthesia and runs workshops in this discipline.

He has an interest in education and is the Anaesthetic Module Supervisor for Regional Anaesthesia, Vascular and Ophthalmology. He also runs tutorials for Anaesthetic Registrars.

Outside of work he enjoys music and travel.


Dr Hugh Taylor, B.Med.Sci, MBBS, FANZCA



Dr Hugh Taylor is a Specialist Anaesthetist employed through Western Health and accredited to work at many private hospitals around Melbourne.

He has a special interest in cardiopulmonary exercise testing as a method to improve surgical patient outcomes and prehabilitation. He also has an interest in patient safety and quality, having served as the Head of Safety and Quality for the Department Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Western Health since 2016.

Dr Taylor received the 2015 ANZCA Melbourne Emerging Anaesthesia Research Award for his study into post-operative oxygen consumption after colorectal surgery requiring bowel resection. He has been published in several Anaesthetic and Surgical peer reviewed academic journals.

Dr Taylor completed his anaesthetic training through the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is an instructor on anaesthetic and critical care courses and a lecturer for the North West Training Scheme Anaesthetic Registrar program.

When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his young son and daughter and playing and watching sport – particularly AFL, football, cricket and rugby.


Dr Nicole Sheridan, MBBS, FANZCA



Dr Nicole Sheridan is a Specialist Anaesthetist currently employed at Western Health and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

She has a special interest in obstetric and ophthalmic anaesthesia and is an Obstetric Special Unit Supervisor at Western Health.

She is also focused on contributing to teaching, doctor welfare, health and quality and is a Supervisor of Training. She is an instructor on anaesthetic airway courses and assists trainee anaesthetists with preparing for their assessments and obtaining obstetric epidural competency.

Dr Sheridan has published papers on fluid administration after cardiac surgery and an analysis of physicians’ utilisation of online education. She has also completed audits into the use of antibiotics at time of incision for caesarian sections and waiting times for obstetric epidurals. She is currently researching the impact of dexamethasone on post-operative outcomes.

Dr Sheridan completed her anaesthetic training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and The Alfred Hospital. When she is not working, she enjoys yoga, cooking and travel.


Dr Gareth Symons, B.Med.Sci, MBBS, FANZCA



Dr Gareth Symons is a Specialist Anaesthetist currently working at Western Health, Northpark Private Hospital and Epworth Freemason’s and holds accreditation at Melbourne Private and Western Private Hospitals.

He has a special interest in paediatric anaesthetics, and completed a one year fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He has conducted research into analgesia for paediatric tonsillectomy.

Dr Symons is the Supervisor of Training at Western Health and lectures trainee anaesthetists.

He completed his anaesthetic training through Western Health.

He finds his work rewarding, particularly when he can assist an anxious patient through their procedure safely and with minimal anxiety.


Dr Navroop Johal, MBBS, FANZCA



Dr Navroop Johal is a Specialist Anaesthetist at Western Health as well as many private hospitals across Melbourne.

He specialises in anaesthesia for major liver resections, general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, plastic surgery, urology, ear nose and throat surgery and paediatrics. He also has a particular interest in medical crisis management.

He is a sought after medical educator and organises and teaches on a multitude of anaesthetic, intensive care and emergency medicine courses.

He is dedicated to the best delivery of anaesthetic care for you and your family, with a special interest in evidence based medicine and continuing education and skill development. He is an avid sports fan, likes to enjoy the outdoors and is a doting father of two young children.
